a place of refuge

A few weeks ago, Tim and I went to A Place of Refuge, also known as Pu'uhonua O Honaunau (say that three times fast!)  In ancient Hawaii, this was a sacred place.  Back then pretty much everything was kapu (forbidden, or taboo) like letting your shadow fall across the King, or men and women eating or bathing together, or walking on the same trail as someone in the upper class.  If you did any of these things, you (and sometimes your family, if the crime was a particularly bad one) were sentenced to death.  You had your choice of getting speared, strangled, or clubbed.  But you had one glimmer of hope: Pu'uhonua O Honaunau.

If you could escape and make it all the way to A Place of Refuge (keep in mind you couldn't just drive down the highway like you can now) and perform a series of sacred rituals in time, then you would be forgiven and you could return home as if nothing had happened.

Whew.  I wonder what the rate of success for that endeavor was.

Anyway, it was really overcast so I didn't get as many good photos as I would have liked, but I did manage to accrue a rather large collection of close-ups of tiki statues.  I like how they turned out.

But before we get into that, here's a picture of Mowsie.  Just because she's just so darn cute and I'm feeling self-indulgent.  :)

On the way to our destination, we stopped at the beach and a couple of other places.

We ate lunch at the Aloha Cafe... oh man do they have good food!  It's a really cool little restaurant right next-door to the Aloha Theater.  Yummmy!! I highly recommend it next time you're on the big island.  :)

And here are the photos from A Place of Refuge.
